What Is Small Group Personal Training?
(And Why It Might Be Just What You’re Looking For!)
6-minute read
At Iceni, we believe fitness should be fun, friendly, and feel-good—whether you’re brand new to the gym or already loving your training. One of our most popular ways to train is through Small Group Personal Training (SGPT). But what is it exactly?
In simple terms: it’s all the benefits of personal training—but shared with a small group of others (usually 4–6 people). You still get coaching tailored to you, but with a healthy dose of encouragement and connection from those training alongside you.
Here’s why so many of our members (from complete beginners to gym enthusiasts) love it:
1️⃣ It’s Fun and Sociable
If the idea of slogging away alone on a treadmill sounds grim, you’ll love SGPT. You’ll be working out alongside people just like you—often starting out, wanting to build confidence, or simply looking for an enjoyable way to get fitter.
At Iceni, we’re all about community.
Our members tell us that training together helps boost motivation, build friendships, and makes turning up to sessions something they look forward to.
2️⃣ It’s More Affordable
One-to-one PT is great—but let’s be honest, it can be pricey. SGPT gives you that personal coaching experience, without the personal trainer price tag.
You’ll still get guidance, accountability and attention from your coach—but you’ll be sharing the session, which keeps it cost-effective and accessible. This means more people can benefit from expert coaching (without the cost becoming a barrier).
3️⃣ It’s Motivating
There’s something about a group session that lifts your energy. You’ll push yourself that little bit further, cheer others on, and soak up the positive vibes in the room.
Whether it’s your first time stepping into the gym, or you’ve been training for years—being part of a supportive group can really help you stay motivated and consistent. And consistency is where the magic happens.
4️⃣ It’s Personal
Just because it’s a group doesn’t mean it’s generic.
Good SGPT is still personal training. Your coach will adapt exercises to your fitness level, any injuries, and your goals—just like in a one-to-one session.
Common Concerns—Let’s Bust Them
“I’ve got an injury—can I still join?”
Absolutely. Our coaches are skilled at adapting exercises. Whether you’re dealing with an old knee injury or recovering from something new, we’ll tailor things so you can still train safely and effectively.
“I’m new and not very fit—will I feel out of place?”
Not at Iceni. We pride ourselves on creating a non-intimidating, welcoming space where everyone is encouraged and supported. We don’t have mirrors all over the place. We don’t have cliques. We do have a brilliant bunch of members who remember what it was like to start out—and will cheer you on from day one.
“I’m nervous about meeting new people.”
It’s perfectly normal to feel this way! But remember—most of the people in your group felt exactly the same when they started. And very quickly, they found that SGPT gave them a safe, friendly place to build confidence and enjoy moving again.
How To Choose The Right SGPT Coach
Here are a few things to look out for:
✅ Testimonials—are people like you enjoying their experience?
✅ Tailored coaching—are sessions adapted for all fitness levels?
✅ Approachability—do the coaches seem welcoming and genuinely caring?
✅ Community vibe—is it a place where you’ll feel comfortable?
At Iceni, we always recommend coming for a free taster session to see if it’s a good fit for you.
Final Thoughts
We love one-to-one coaching—but we think Small Group Personal Training is one of the most enjoyable, supportive, and sustainable ways to train.
Whether your goal is weight loss, building strength, reducing stress, or simply moving more—you’ll find that SGPT offers just the right mix of personal attention and community support to keep you on track.
We run SGPT sessions at Iceni in Colchester throughout the week—welcoming all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. If you’d like to give it a go, we’d love to meet you!
Just drop us a message and we’ll sort the rest.
